One of my favorite parts of the trip to Maine was tea and popovers at the Jordan Pond House in Acadia National Park. For those of you who have never had a popover, it's an eggy, hollow, muffin-shaped pastry that takes a bit like french toast. In other words, it's heavenly. Especially when served piping hot alongside strawberry jam and butter.
I liked the popovers so much I decided to buy a pan and try my hand at making my own. The recipe only calls for about six ingredients so I was optimistic. I was wrong. My popovers not only lacked the height of the Pond House originals, but were heavy instead of heavenly. The recipe called for a "speck" of baking soda. Anyone have an idea how much that is? I took it as a New England term for "pinch" but perhaps I was wrong. But I will not go down without a fight. I will master the popover (cue Rocky theme now). Until the next round.

Hi! Thanks for visiting my blog - the sambal goreng can easily be made vegetarian by omitting the prawns and shrimp paste. By strange coincidence, I made popovers yesterday - successful only after 3 tries and no baking soda. So don't give up :)
